Location: Where Is Red Chilli Rest Camp?

Red Chilli Rest Camp is situated on the southern bank of the Victoria Nile within Murchison Falls National Park, in the Paraa area — the main tourism hub of the park.

The Paraa area sits at the point where the park is bisected by the Victoria Nile, and the Paraa ferry crossing (operated by Uganda Wildlife Authority) is just minutes from the camp.

This location is strategically ideal: the game-rich northern bank savannah is a short ferry ride away, the river itself is immediately accessible for boat cruises, and Murchison Falls is just 17 km upstream.

Red Chilli is set in a shaded, riverine environment with natural vegetation, and the camp is deliberately low-impact and unfenced — meaning that wildlife (including hippos, warthogs, baboons, and occasionally elephants) can and do wander through the grounds.

This authentic bush setting is a significant part of the appeal. Waking up to the sound of hippos grunting in the Nile, or watching a troop of olive baboons cross the camp at dawn, is a genuinely immersive safari experience that no hotel room with air conditioning can replicate.

How to Get to Red Chilli Rest Camp

From Kampala (via Masindi) Take the Kampala–Gulu highway north. Turn left at Karuma toward Masindi. Continue through Masindi and Budongo Forest to the Kichumbanyobo gate. Drive to Paraa. Total: approx. 305 km, 5–6 hours.
From Kampala (via Gulu) Take the Kampala–Gulu highway to Gulu, then southwest to Paraa gate (Tangi gate). Approx. 390 km, 6–7 hours. Longer but passes through Gulu city.
From Gulu city Approx. 85 km southwest to the Tangi gate / Paraa. 1.5–2 hours on a variable road.
By air Charter flights available to Pakuba Airstrip (inside the park, near Paraa). Several Kampala operators offer scheduled charters. Journey time: approx. 1.5 hours from Entebbe.
Public transport Take a bus or shared taxi from Kampala to Masindi, then arrange a special hire vehicle to the park. Not recommended for first-time visitors without guide assistance.
Self-drive A 4WD vehicle is strongly recommended, especially for travel on internal park tracks. A saloon car can reach the main gate but park roads (especially in wet season) require clearance.

Accommodation at Red Chilli Rest Camp: Options and Prices

Red Chilli Rest Camp offers a range of accommodation options spanning from basic camping to comfortable en-suite rooms — making it suitable for backpackers, budget travelers, and mid-range safari visitors alike.

All accommodation is set in the natural riverside environment, and the proximity to the Nile means wildlife encounters are part of the experience regardless of which option you choose.

1. Camping

Red Chilli’s campsite is one of the most famous and beloved wild camping experiences in Uganda. Pitching a tent at Red Chilli means sleeping just metres from the Victoria Nile, with hippos audible through the night and a genuine bush atmosphere that no permanent structure can match.

The camping area has shared ablution facilities (toilets and showers), and campers have access to the camp’s restaurant and bar.

Price Approximately USD $10–15 per person per night
Facilities Shared flush toilets, hot showers, electricity points, secure storage
What to bring Your own tent, sleeping bag, mat, torch/headlamp
Wildlife note The site is unfenced — baboons and warthogs are common visitors. Secure your food. Follow staff safety guidance after dark regarding hippos.
Best for Backpackers, overlanders, budget travelers, camping enthusiasts

2. Safari Tents

Red Chilli’s safari tents are pre-erected canvas tents set on raised platforms in shaded positions around the camp. They are the ideal middle ground between camping and a room — offering more comfort and privacy than pitching your own tent while retaining the authentic outdoor bush feel. Each tent is furnished with beds, bedding, and a mosquito net. Shared bathroom facilities are nearby.

Price Approximately USD $30–45 per person per night (sharing)
Facilities Furnished beds, bedding, mosquito nets, shared bathrooms
Best for Couples and friends seeking comfort without the expense of a full room
Notes Availability can be limited — book in advance during peak season (June–Aug, Dec–Jan)

3. Bandas (Self-Contained Cottages)

Bandas are simple, permanent, self-contained cottages offering en-suite bathroom facilities (toilet and shower), beds, bedding, and mosquito nets.

They represent the most comfortable option at Red Chilli and provide privacy and security while remaining affordable by East African lodge standards. Bandas suit couples, small families, and travelers who want a solid base without the full luxury lodge price tag.

Price Approximately USD $60–90 per room per night (en-suite double)
Facilities Private en-suite bathroom, beds, bedding, mosquito nets, fan or natural ventilation
Best for Couples, small families, independent travelers wanting privacy
Notes Bandas book up quickly during Uganda’s peak safari months — reserve early

4. Standard Rooms

Red Chilli also offers a limited number of standard rooms with en-suite facilities that provide a step up in comfort from the bandas.

These are suitable for travelers who want a reliable, straightforward room in a bush setting at a price still well below what you would pay at Murchison’s luxury lodges. Check the current Red Chilli website or contact directly for the latest room configurations and pricing.

Food, Drink, and the Red Chilli Bar

Red Chilli Rest Camp has a restaurant and bar that is open to all guests and to day visitors passing through the park. The menu is unpretentious and generous — hearty, affordable meals including breakfast, lunch, and dinner featuring both Ugandan local dishes and Western comfort food. Think ugali, rice, beans, matoke, grilled chicken, beef stew, fish, and pasta. Vegetarian options are available.

The Red Chilli bar is a social hub — particularly in the evenings when guests returning from afternoon game drives and boat cruises gather to share stories, swap wildlife sightings, and watch the sun go down over the Nile.

Cold beers, soft drinks, and local spirits are available. The bar area has a campfire atmosphere that makes it a genuinely convivial place to spend an evening in the bush.

Budget tip: Eating at Red Chilli’s restaurant is significantly cheaper than dining at Murchison’s luxury lodges. A full meal typically costs USD $8–15 per person. Stocking up on snacks and supplies in Masindi before arriving is wise for extended stays.

Activities at and Around Red Chilli Rest Camp

Red Chilli Rest Camp’s location inside Murchison Falls National Park means the full range of the park’s extraordinary activities are immediately accessible. The camp organizes or facilitates all major park activities, either directly or through coordination with Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers.

1. Game Drives — Northern Bank Safari

The northern bank of the Victoria Nile is the game-rich heart of Murchison Falls National Park. Reached via the Paraa ferry (a short, picturesque crossing of the Nile with hippos and Nile crocodiles visible from the boat), the northern bank savannah is home to the park’s full complement of large mammals: African elephant, lion, leopard, Rothschild’s giraffe (one of the world’s most endangered giraffe subspecies, with a significant population here), buffalo, Uganda kob, oribi, waterbuck, Jackson’s hartebeest, and warthog. Cheetah are occasionally recorded.

Game drives typically depart at dawn (6:00–6:30 AM) for the best wildlife activity and photography light, returning before midday heat. Afternoon drives (3:30–6:30 PM) are equally productive as animals become active again before dusk.

Game drive cost Approx. USD $30–50 per person (vehicle hire + guide) — confirm with Red Chilli or UWA
Park entry fee USD $40 per person per day (paid separately to UWA)
Duration Half-day (3–4 hrs) or full-day game drives available
Best time 6:00–10:00 AM and 3:30–6:30 PM
What to bring Binoculars, camera with zoom lens, sunscreen, water, hat

2. Murchison Falls Nile Boat Cruise

The Murchison Falls boat cruise is the single most iconic activity in the park and one of the unmissable experiences of any Uganda safari.

The cruise departs from the Paraa jetty (minutes from Red Chilli camp) and travels upstream along the Victoria Nile for approximately 17 km to the base of Murchison Falls — where the entire Nile River forces itself through a 7-metre gap in the rock to create an explosion of white water and mist that is visible from kilometres away.

Along the way, the riverbanks are lined with hundreds of hippos (Murchison hosts one of Africa’s largest hippo populations), Nile crocodiles basking in the sun, and an extraordinary abundance of waterbirds including African fish eagles, goliath herons, pied and giant kingfishers, yellow-billed storks, African skimmers, and — for the very lucky — the Shoebill Stork. Elephants and buffaloes frequently drink at the river’s edge, creating some of the finest river safari scenes in Africa.

Cruise cost Approx. USD $30 per person (non-resident) — paid to UWA
Duration Approximately 3 hours (upstream to falls and return)
Departure times Morning (typically 8:00 AM) and afternoon (2:00 PM) — confirm locally
Tip Morning cruise has better light for photography and more active wildlife
Capacity Shared boat with other park visitors — book in advance in peak season

3. Murchison Falls Hike — Top of the Falls

After the boat cruise brings you to the base of Murchison Falls, a short but steep hike of approximately 45 minutes leads to the top of the falls — where you stand at the edge of the gorge and look directly down at the full force of the Nile exploding through the gap below.

The spray, noise, and sheer power of Murchison Falls viewed from the top is genuinely awe-inspiring and provides the best photographic vantage point of the falls themselves. The hike is strenuous in places but manageable for most reasonably fit visitors with good walking shoes.

Hike cost Included in park entry fee (with ranger escort — mandatory)
Duration 45 minutes to 1 hour each way
Best combined with The morning boat cruise — hike to the top after the cruise drops you at the base
What to wear Sturdy, non-slip shoes; expect to get wet from the spray near the top

4. Shoebill Stork Spotting

The Shoebill Stork (Balaeniceps rex) is one of Africa’s most sought-after and extraordinary birds — a prehistoric-looking, slate-grey giant with a massive shoe-shaped bill that stands up to 1.5 metres tall in the papyrus swamps of the Albertine Rift.

Murchison Falls National Park and the surrounding Nile delta wetlands are one of the most reliable sites in East Africa for Shoebill sightings.

Red Chilli can organize or advise on dedicated Shoebill-spotting excursions, typically involving a boat into the papyrus channels of the Nile delta area. Serious birders often list this as the highlight of their entire Uganda safari.

Shoebill boat trip cost Approx. USD $100–150 per boat (shared) — confirm current rates with Red Chilli
Best time Early morning (6:00–9:00 AM)
Success rate High at good sites — knowledgeable local guides significantly improve odds
What to bring Binoculars, zoom camera, patience

5. Birdwatching

With over 450 recorded bird species, Murchison Falls National Park is one of Uganda’s premier birding destinations, and Red Chilli Rest Camp’s riverside location puts guests in the heart of it.

Species regularly seen around the camp itself include the African grey parrot, woodland kingfisher, grey-backed fiscal, swamp flycatcher, African pied wagtail, and various sunbirds and weavers.

The river edge produces goliath heron, African fish eagle, long-tailed cormorant, and various egret and plover species. Dedicated birding walks and drives can be arranged through the camp or independently with UWA rangers.

6. Chimpanzee Trekking — Budongo Forest

One of the most popular add-on activities for visitors based at Red Chilli is a half-day or full-day excursion to Budongo Forest Reserve — just 30 km south of Murchison Falls park boundary.

Budongo is home to one of East Africa’s largest habituated chimpanzee communities, and chimpanzee trekking here is an outstanding complement to the savannah game drive and river cruise experience of Murchison. Red Chilli can advise on logistics; Budongo trekking permits cost USD $90 per person.

7. Community and Cultural Visits

Red Chilli and the surrounding area offer opportunities for cultural visits to local communities near the park boundary, including interactions with the Acholi and Banyoro people — the traditional communities of northern Uganda.

Cultural experiences can include village walks, traditional dance performances, visits to local markets, and craft demonstrations.

These visits contribute income directly to communities living alongside the park and add a valuable human dimension to the safari experience.

Best Time to Visit Red Chilli Rest Camp and Murchison Falls

Dec–Feb (Dry — Excellent) Clear skies, excellent game viewing as animals concentrate at water sources. Low vegetation makes wildlife easier to spot. Best photography conditions.
June–Aug (Dry — Best) Peak safari season. Optimal game drives and boat cruises. The Nile is low and wildlife congregates along the river. Book Red Chilli well in advance.
Mar–May (Long Rains) Heavy rainfall, some tracks impassable. Park is lush and green. Birding is excellent (migratory species present). Prices drop significantly — good value.
Sep–Nov (Short Rains) Brief, manageable showers. Good birdwatching. Fewer tourists. Park is green and scenic. A reasonable time to visit for those on a flexible schedule.

For the best overall experience at Red Chilli Rest Camp — good game drives, reliable boat cruises, comfortable camping, and manageable trails — plan your visit for June, July, or August (peak season) or December through February (quieter but excellent).

Book in advance for peak season as Red Chilli’s affordable rates and prime location make it popular with both independent travelers and organized groups.

Practical Tips for Visiting Red Chilli Rest Camp

  • Book in advance: Red Chilli is very popular, especially June–August and December–January. Bandas and safari tents sell out weeks ahead in peak season. Email or book online directly.
  • Pay park fees at the gate: Uganda Wildlife Authority collects park entry fees (USD $40/person/day) at the park gate. These are separate from Red Chilli accommodation fees. Have USD cash ready.
  • Wildlife safety at night: The camp is unfenced. After dark, always use a torch, walk with awareness, and follow staff guidance — hippos occasionally come ashore and should never be approached.
  • Currency: Bring enough USD cash for your entire stay. The nearest ATM is in Masindi (approx. 80 km from Paraa). Red Chilli accepts USD and UGX; card payment may be available but cash is safer.
  • Malaria prevention: Murchison Falls is a malaria zone. Take prescribed antimalarials, use DEET repellent every evening, sleep under a mosquito net, and wear long sleeves after dusk.
  • Ferry hours: The Paraa UWA ferry operates on a schedule. Confirm current crossing times with Red Chilli staff — missing the last crossing affects your game drive schedule.
  • Fuel: Fill up in Masindi before entering the park. There is no fuel station at Red Chilli or Paraa.
  • Mobile signal: Limited at Red Chilli. MTN and Airtel Uganda have some signal at the camp. WiFi may be available but is intermittent — do not rely on it for important communications.
